Your first chiropractic visit: what to expect
If you have never seen a chiropractor, the first appointment can feel like a bit of a mystery. Most of it is simply a conversation and a careful exam. Here is a plain-language walk-through so you know what is coming before you arrive.
1. The history: your story first
Your chiropractor will ask what hurts, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and how it affects work, sleep, and exercise. Expect questions about past injuries, medications, and general health too. If the problem started after a car crash, mention it right away so the visit can be set up as an ICBC claim.
2. The exam: checking how you move
A typical exam looks at posture, range of motion, strength, reflexes, and sensation, plus a few hands-on tests to see which tissues are irritated. Wear comfortable clothes you can bend and turn in. Nothing is forced; tell us if any test is too sore and we will adjust.
3. Imaging only when it is needed
Most back and neck pain does not need an X-ray. Imaging is usually saved for situations where it could change the plan, such as significant trauma or certain warning signs. We can take X-rays in the clinic when they are clinically warranted.
4. What we found and the plan
Before any treatment, you should hear what we think is going on, what we are not worried about, and what we would recommend. A plan might include spinal or joint manipulation, soft-tissue work, a few home exercises, and simple desk or sleep changes. You can ask questions and say no to anything you are not comfortable with.
5. Treatment and after-care
If treatment is appropriate, it may start on the first day. Some people feel mild soreness for a day or so afterward, a bit like after a new workout. Keep gently moving, and let us know if anything feels unusual. If we think your symptoms need a different provider or more tests, we will tell you and refer you.
What to bring
A list of medications, any recent imaging or reports, your extended health benefits details, and your ICBC claim number if this is a motor vehicle injury. At Rupert Health we direct-bill ICBC for chiropractic and active rehab, though ICBC covers only part of each visit. Current new-patient and follow-up fees are listed on our Appointments page.
When not to wait for an appointment
This post is general information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for an exam. Go to emergency care right away for new numbness in the groin or saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden severe weakness, chest pain, or pain after a major fall or crash with other injuries.
